SciFi and Fantasy Art: Ganesha's TempleIt all started off with my trip through India. I was left stunned by this temple, which I shall try to describe for you: I came out of the heat, which was hardly enjoyable anymore and entered an almost cold dark space which felt like churches do, filled with reverence for a god, and sincerity of human devotion. 4 years later this image still in my head I wrote a poem about it, another year down the line I hoped my skill in drawing would be enough to capture my feelings, which of course it didn't, but I got close! I hope you enjoy, I wish I could explain better...
For those intrested in his artifacts: Parashu/Battle-axe Symbolizes the detachtment of evrything earthbound; Pasha/Rope Used to cathch demons; Pustaka/Book Symbold of transcendent wisdom; and Chnadra/Moon symbolizing the merging of opposites. Here's my poem:
I crossed the step Into darkness, stillness A step into cool air Solidness, emptiness Sunlight streamed in Revealing feelings of holiness There he was seated Showing curves of godliness Perfect respect For what some may call happiness I crossed Ganesha’s step… |

Well done! Meike de Nooy replies: "Thanks! That's exactly what the point of the little figure was! *huggles* and yes.. Ganesha is my favourite diety too, if as a european habitant there is such a thi8ng possible. But I assume gods are for everyone ne? The light effects took me quite some time but I'm glad it shows! Thanks!" | |
| 8 Apr 2004 | Emily Carding | Wowzers! This picture exudes such a feeling of warmth and power. Your awe in the presence of the divine is very well put across here! Meike de Nooy replies: "Thankyou THANKYOU! thankyou! That is the greatest compliment of all, as that is exactly what I was trying to archieve! " | |
| 8 May 2004 | Marieke Leen | wow! When I first only saw the top of it, I though it was a statue you made, it drawn SO good! ^_^ (well ofcourse it is a statue, but on paper.. not really 3D, I thought it was 3D ) byebye Meike de Nooy replies: "*grins* now there's a compliment!!! Thankyou! I did put a lot of effort in this one so I'm glad it pays off!" | |
| 18 May 2004 | Kaykamisch | Beautiful, both the poem and this picture. I came here from the poem, and Talie was right, it has a bit of an Aztec-ish touch to it, it the way it's almost squared. The colors you used are wonderful, so warm, as Emily put it. The statue just seems to pop right out at you, like it's really there and not just in 2D. I get the sense of a lot of feeling in it, so I guess you got it right ~Kay Meike de Nooy replies: "Thanks! 1 for leaving me such sweet words... though I'm not sure how you mean you came here from the poem... and who is Talie? did I miss something? Looks through past commenters... Though I'm really happy that the 3D effect worked well and that you like the colours... they are all from memory though I did have some examples of ganesha to work from and 2 thanks for being my 1000th commenter!!! I did delete some picture a while ago along with some comments, but your the one and only who actually managed to hit the 1000 YAY!" | |
| 5 Jun 2004 | Jeniece N. McDonald | This is crazy! It looks like a photograph, one of the relly old faded ones that come from movies. The ones where the main action character dude picks up an old leather box in a dimly lit tent. The box creaks as he lifts the lid, a little dust falls off it, and then sitting right on top of a mound of pictures, yellowed and crisp with age, is this. Meike de Nooy replies: "*grins* it is a statue at the time it was like 4 times my height, very impressive. some things just stick on your mind! Thanks for the nice story to go with it!" | |
| 7 Nov 2004 | Konina | i love the way you've done the picture. The lighting makes it looks so tall and msterious. i know exactly how you feel as been to India aswell. Did you visit Agra and the Taj Mahal or Fatehpur Sikri ( i think thats how u spell it ) Anyways lovely picture. Meike de Nooy replies: "yeah, in my memoery it was a rather impressive towering image. I've seen the Taj Mahal and I've seen so much there it can last me a lifetime and there is so much more to see I really need to go back sometime!" | |
| 4 Mar 2006 | Anoriel Isilthien from Poland | HOLY MOTHER,what the great Ganesha,Meike!! I could imagine that this Indian God should be as huge to make people so little like mouse... Excellent job... Meike de Nooy replies: "I think it mostly made me feel really small. That is why I depicted the little person. This picture was mostly trying to describe the feeling. Thanks for the comment! Glad you liked it!" | |
| 12 Apr 2006 | Anoriel from Poland | Hi,Meike! Thanks for your answer to my comment. I'd like to ask you about one thing. Are you fascinated by India and Bollywood musicals?Me too. And I was imagine Bollywood musicals mixed with LOTR. You know,Tolkien male and female elves dancing in tradicional clothes on a pictures of color shinning Bombay,Indian music.
I know that it sound a little weird and silly, but as I say,the world would be so boring without imagination. If you liked my ideas, just write to me and tell me...
Cheers.... | |
